A sign made famous by Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio. The horns have various meanings: when a man has an unfaithful wife, he is given the horns to be identified, it is also used in Satanism to indicate the beginning of a ritual, or in witchcraft. Dio states that his grandmother used to do the horns to ward off the evil eye off him, preventing him from danger.
In superstition when encountered by unfortunate events, the sign was used to protect someone from evil…It was often used when a black cat passes by, or when facing any thing that could bring bad luck such as a witch.He states that he did not invent the horns, he only made them fashionable in the heavy metal industry, becoming pretty much his trademark “until the Britney Spears audience decided to do it as well”.
Dio needed a sign of his own, after Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne used the peace sign in his appearances, he wanted something different from Ozzy which is why he chose the horns.
