Samsara Blues Experiment are a Berlin based psychedelic rock band, founded in Summer 2007 by lead guitarist/singer Christian Peters. They went through several changes in the first period but are in constant line-up since September 2008 featuring Hans Eiselt (guitar), drummer Thomas Vedder and Richard Behrens (bass). As the band name implies, three elemental aspects are to notice - the blues as the foundation where it all comes from, the inclusion of spiritual influences accompanied by Indian/raga music and the experimental approach to mix up varied elements in a convincing manner. Following my recent article on Kraut and its closely related genre salad “Psychedelic / Stoner / Doom”, I recently found myself juked (what’s that?) by Berlin’s Samsara Blues Experiment: it is certainly not a Blues band, and the album is definitely not Hippie / New Age / Space Rock as one might have guessed.
I was baited by the cool terminology, expecting something alongside Ambient / World / Folk music (yea yea, not Metal), and I am immediately struck by memories of Mastodon‘s juggernaut album “Crack The Skye”. I thought I had the album on by mistake, so I switched to my music player and it said “Samsara Blues Experiment”, what the hell. I must admit that recent albums by my favorite Metal bands were a letdown (Hello Mastodon, Opeth), so I was genuinely surprised to hear something crushing and engaging again. A monster of an album with sick riffs, melodic layers, lots of 70s inspired Prog and just awesome energy flow that should put shame to most Metal bands smothering and monopolizing the web with relatively mediocre output while leeching on the previous fame. It just feels good that somewhere on the web 47 minutes of Prog, Blues, Sludge Metal and Indian raga wizardry can help one feed their need for good music.
Released last month on April 10th 2017, the album racked up almost 300 purchases on Bandcamp, with supportive comments and high praise all over. Here’s the album stream:
