Amorphis is a Finnish progressive/melodic metal band, and formerly death/doom band started by Jan Rechberger, Tomi Koivusaari and Esa Holopainen in Helsinki, Finland in 1990. Amorphis absorbed and incorporated influences from many metal genres, and with time passing their sound evolved dramatically. Initially, the band was a Death Metal act, but with time they have evolved into making music that is more classifiable as Doom Metal with folk influences, and, more recently, Progressive Metal and Hard Rock, utilizing increasingly complex arrangements and a less brutal sound. Amorphis is also well known for their use of the Finnish national epic, the Read more on Last.fm.
Amorphis have been evolving for the past 10 years and they show no sign of stopping ! The albums are just getting more epic, more unique and more classic!
An overall masterpiece in my opinion, if you consider the epic vocals, guitar melodies, catchy songs, keyboard background fillings/folkish feel as well as some thoughtful lyrics.I’ve been drawn to the graceful melodies of Amorphis, which are also used by Dark Tranquility, Opeth, etc… Still Amorphis is “simpler” ! That doesn’t mean it’s less appealing. Oh no, their songs are extremely catchy.

- Album Story and review
“The story being told here is primarily based on the protagonist Lemminkäinen’s quest to kill the white swan of Tuonela (the land of the dead) as the last of the three difficult tasks he has agreed to in order to win the hand of one of the beautiful daughters of Louhi, the powerful Queen-witch of Pohjola. Unfortunately, his efforts do not end well and he is betrayed, meeting a gruesome death in the dark waters of the river. Back at his home, his sorceress mother sees blood seeping from a hair brush he had left behind and knows from this omen that he is dead. Pained with grief, she has a mighty rake forged by the gods and uses it to drag the river for the pieces of his shattered body and is eventually able to bring him back to life. The re-animated Lemminkäinen is initially undaunted in his pursuit for the wife promised to him, but finally realizes that it is only a futile dream and he regretfully journeys back to his home. This entire story is brilliantly recounted in the song lyrics if one wishes to read along, and it’s highly recommend that you do so in order to get the full enjoyment from this album. For an even better understanding, the original translated poems that inspired this album are also found linked on the bands website” – Source
Weaving The Incantation is a powerful song which clearly shows vocal power right from the start.
A Servant is a very catchy song as well as Silent Waters which is composed of lovely sorrowful melodic music with acoustic guitars and clean vocals.
Towards And Against is another classic one with very deep and diverse vocals, a reminder of Opeth’s frontman.
I Of Crimson Blood starts with lovely piano lines, which reminded me of Tales from a Thousand Lakes album, but turned out to have less evil/mysterious part and more of the epic soothing part.
The band has truly blossomed throughout the years in order to develop a mood of their own.
Her Alone is the probably the least unique song on the album in my opinion. Clean vocals were remarkable though.
Enigma is a catchy folk song, acoustic all the way!
Shaman is another beautiful kinda-folkish song. One of the album’s best for sure.
The White Swan is a touching song which sets a good mood going into the last song of the album.
Black River and its perfect intro: melodic and classic feelings got involved as well as the great guitar work!
Overall Rating: 9/10
